It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Mrs. Estelle Marie Gordon, also known as Mama Stelle. She transitioned to her heavenly home on August 25, 2021, at the age of 88. She was born to the late Albert and Lucille Brower on February 12, 1933, Estelle, one of seven children, grew up in Thomasville, Georgia. At an early age, Estelle was drawn to the Lord. She attended Midway Baptist Church and led songs in the church choir. After graduating from Douglas High School, she married Avon Gordon. They raised five beautiful children, four daughters and a son in St. Petersburg, Florida and later relocated to Macon, Georgia. Estelle started her career as a homemaker and went on to work in several industries becoming one of the first African American bank tellers in Macon, GA and one of the first African American Directors for Mary Kaye Cosmetics. She also worked in elementary special education and retail. At the age of 54, Estelle went back to school to obtain her nursing license and worked at St. Anthony’s Hospital in St. Petersburg, Florida until retirement. Throughout her life, Estelle was a crusader for Christ. It did not matter what you did, who you were or what you believed in, she accepted everyone. She would do anything she could to help others including opening her home to those in need, paying others’ bills (even when she couldn't afford to), ministering to young women and hosting weekly rap sessions with youths in her home. She also was an advocate for truth and justice and spent time supporting civil rights for those that were mistreated. As she got older, she enjoyed spending time attending Ebenezer Baptist Church, singing old hymns and praising God. Often people would visit or call and share stories of how they came to know Christ through her or how they got out of a bad situation after she prayed for them. Estelle Gordon loved God and people and lived her life so she could live again with God in eternity. Estelle Gordon was preceded in death by her husband, Avon Gordon; son, Wayne Gordon and daughters; Marilyn Brabham and Winnifred Holloman. She leaves to cherish her memories, daughters; Martha Gordon Denmark of Macon, Georgia and Mary Gordon of Glen Allen, Virginia; sister, Margaret Morris of Simsbury, Connecticut; brother, Odis Brower of Dublin, Georgia; grandchildren; Stephan Tobler, Angel Gordon, Nicklaus Brabham, Yarvis Denmark, Quinton Denmark, Quentessa Denmark and Matthew Brabham; aunt, Jessica Hill “Aunt Mae”.
